Inquiring Minds want to know…  why the Prose defination in the last entry.

Well.

Because.   My son attended his very first Forensics competion and made it to the finals, and placed 3rd in finals  –   with a “prose”.    Now, granted, I have heard him go over (and over…and over… and over … and……) this little story that he is doing 100 times. – The REAL story of the Three Little Pigsby Alexendar T. Wolf.       But, the official classifcation of what he was doing was “prose”.   So, I was just curious to just exactly what it was.

What is “Prose” ?

Posted by Prairierose on Jan 30, 2006

According to Wikipedia…

Prose is writing distinguished from poetry by its greater variety of rhythm and its closer resemblance to the patterns of everyday speech. The word prose comes from the Latin prosa, meaning straightforward. This describes the type of writing that prose embodies, unadorned with obvious stylistic devices. Prose writing is usually adopted for the description of facts or the discussion of ideas. Thus it may be used for newspapers, magazines, novels, encyclopedias, screenplays, films, philosophy, letters, essays, history, biography and many other forms of media.

Wednesday Wonders - Delilah

Posted by Prairierose on Jan 29, 2006

Deliliah
Judges 16:1-21 Click on verse to read in seperate window.(Higgs. 2004)

1. What weaknesses other than his attraction to the wrong sort of women do you find in Samson? Do you see any of those same weak spots in your life? In your man’s life?(Higgs. 2004)

2. What weaknesses did Delilah have? Did they ultimately serve her well or poorly? Is a weakness the same thing as a besetting sin? *Note: You’ll have to reread passage and possibly check the dictionary for definition. - Dictionary.com (Higgs. 2004)

3. Samson was often depicted as taking revenge for one wrong or another. Could Delilah have been seeking revenge too? For what perhaps? Is revenge ever a legitimate motive? Why or why not? (Higgs. 2004)

4. Climb into Delilah’s heart. What do you see there? An angry woman? A hurt child? A dserted wife? A greedy harlot? Think of all the ways you might describe her, based on the scriptural story and your own experiences as a woman. (Higgs. 2004)

5. How much did the reward of silver influence her decision to deceive Samson? Have you ever taken a job simply for the money or in any way been influenced by monetary gain? What did you learn from those experiences? Are there potential Philistines in your life now, tempting you with easy money? (Higgs. 2004)

6. Why was Samson so easily deceived? Was that Delilah’s fault or his? Are there blind spots in your own life where you can be swayed more easily? At work? With your children? With certain friends? What could you do, specifically, to avoid being ensnared like Samson? (Higgs. 2004)

7. What was Delilah’s root sin? Lust? Greed? Idolatary? Selfishness? How does that same sin reare its ugly head in your own life, and what could you do to surrender it to the lordship of Christ? What is the most important lesson you’ve learned from the darkn, disastrous story of Samson and Delilah? (Higgs. 2004)

The Rest of the Story(s)

1. A couple of weeks ago, I was feeling overwhelmed and out of time; so I just listed 13 things I wanted to blog about.  The feedback I got was that you wanted to read ……  the rest of the story.   So, that is what my TT is all about this week.   I copied those things I wanted to blog about over to here — and there is a link to most of them (I didn’t quite get it all accomplished).   So, I give you …..    The .    REST of the story.

2 years ago, my mom had just died, my world had caved in, and I was trying desperately to dig myself back out.

I decided that my diet plan needed to be re-enacted, and I made an appointment with the place that I had lost 75 lbs with previously.

Attended above mentioned appointment.

While checking me medically, they detected an irregular pulse. An EKG showed that my heart was out of rhythm.

I was directed to go straight to the hospital, and give ER the paperwork they were sending over. I was scared. I had my DIL and grandson with me. This wasn’t happening. It shouldn’t be any big deal. They would check it out, I would be fine, and I would go home.

Forensics

Posted by Prairierose on Jan 26, 2006

What is it?   watching too much Law & Order, or CSI, I’m thinking my son is looking into DNA and criminalogy study.   Apparently, there are 2 kinds of forensics.  Not to say Ethan won’t be studying DNA and criminal law — as a matter of fact, he will be earning a Boy Scout merit badge next month is just that.

But for now … forensics is….

The Price Of Children

Posted by Prairierose on Jan 25, 2006

It’s nice, The government recently calculated the cost of raising a child from birth to 18 and came up with $160,140 for a middle income family. Talk about sticker shock! That doesn’t even touch college tuition.*******************************

But $160,140 isn’t so bad if you break it down. It translates into:

* $8,896.66 a year,

* $741.38 a month, or

* $171.08 a week.

* That’s a mere $24.24 a day!

* Just over a dollar an hour.

Life Comes With Problems

Posted by Prairierose on Jan 24, 2006

“For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin — real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be got through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.”   — Fr. Alfred D’Souza

And how.  I sometimes feel like “if I can just do this, and this, and if I could set aside this”, then life would be good.   But, it doesn’t really matter what I do.  Life is life.   Its up to me to set the quality.  Quite honestly, except for “me”, life is pretty good.   My husband is being loving and supporting most of the time.  And Ethan, is a good kid.  Yes, some fine tuning is needed, maybe even a major overhaul in some areas.  But by in large, he truly is a good kid.

Star Spangled Banner

Posted by Prairierose on Jan 23, 2006

Last Wednesday, Ethan and his fellow Barbershopers had the opportunity to sing the Star Spangled Banner prior to the basketball games at Washburn University in Topeka.  Quite an honor!    and they will be doing it again February 15.     If nothing else, Ethan belonging to this Barbershop group has exposed him to different opportunities, chances to perform and sing where he probably would never have had the chance to do before.

New Toy

Posted by Prairierose on Jan 23, 2006

B0007KP5VC.01._PE27_SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpeg This is our my new toy (David just helped me get it). Between the bonus I recieved for Christmas from the church, and from the trucking firm we work for, and a nice big gift certificate for Walmart from my middle son … we decided that we would try and get a camcorder. Now. I would have been just as happy to have gotten it from Walmart, and played by the rules of gift giving. But. David didn’t want to do it that way, and he was willing to do it the other way. He got on EBAY, and after lots of researching and asking questions, he bid on a camera that would have cost twice as much as what we would have gotten at Walmart. Either way. i’m happy. And he has a $100 Walmart Gift certificate. Now… I just need to figure out how it works. I think I know of one cute little ahhh, subject that I could probably practice on. Will have to get ahold of them and plan an afternoon out, playing with cameras and such. Now… I just need to figure out how it works. the Weekend

Posted by Prairierose on Jan 23, 2006

Saturday was a fairly quiet day.  David, of course worked, and Ethan went over to a friend’s house.   I had worked until 8:00 Thursday and Friday night out to the office to get the “end of the quarter” fuel report done…or at least my part of it.   Its not bad when you keep up with it every week.  But, this last quarter, I’ve more or less gone out there and done what I had to for the week.   And of course, it caught up with me.  I had two options … worked late during the week, or work Saturday.   I chose to work late those evening, so I could have my Saturday free.

the Dream

Posted by Prairierose on Jan 20, 2006

When I was a senior in high school, I dropped out, got married, had babies. In the meantime, though, I did go through a program that was through the High School of where we lived — they contacted my old high school, found out what credits I needed to do to be able to graduate. I lacked 1 1/2 credits — and through a correspondence course, I was able to complete, and recieved my diploma from my old high school.

During this time, and for some time to come, I had a reoccuring dream. I was back at my high school. Sometimes, nothing had changed. Other times, my present life overlapped the high school life. But, there was the same thread of consistency there — going back or being in my old high school. I finally figured out that I was probably having the dreams because it was something that had been left “uncompleted” in my life.

Thirteen Things about Carolyn
1. This is not a teaser. My Thursday Thirteen will be posted NEXT week. I have been working on it all week (you can click on the Thursday 13 category link — and read the ones I have gotten done) — but, the bottom line is, I didn’t get it finished. Last night, my blog was down. I kept getting a “page not found” message.

2. And this morning… we won’t got there. Let’s just say it was. not. a. good. morning.

3. And leave it at that.

4. I’m feeling way too much anxiety about not getting this done — and that made me decide that I really do need to step back for a moment. I’m not going to post it “half-way” … I am overwhelmed, and I won’t have the time to make any visits. So, if I can’t do it right, I’m not going to do it at all — this week.

5. Regardless of whether or not its for Thursday 13 or not, these are entries I do want to get done –recorded, so I’m not placing all the emphasis I am on this “just because” its TT. They are things I would be blogging about, because I want them documented — the whole purpose to blogging for me.

6. But. Its just not a good day.

7. I already said that, didn’t I?

8. So, for those of you who might stop by, looking for “the rest of the story” from last week… I’m sorry.

9. I’m not doing this on purpose.

10. I’m not giving up.

11. But I am stepping back, momentarily.

12. Ok. I said I wasn’t doing the TT this week. But, I realized I had 8 or 9 “points” there, trying to explain why I wasn’t doing TT this week, and realized, put some numbers on them, and voila’ …. instant TT.

13. I’m sorry. I do feel better though. Not. The problems/situations/feelings …. they are still there. Next weeks, folks. Promise!

Postnote:  I just went into Leanne’s blog to get the TT code … this is the end. There won’t be a next week. It grew to be bigger than what she can deal with — which I can definately understand.   So, its kinda up in the air.   It sounds like a few of the ladies are volunterring to take the code and keep it going …. so, we’ll just have to see.    Regardless, I am going to finish last week’s post.

Memory Monday

Posted by Prairierose on Jan 16, 2006

Since my mom and I lived with her parents, I had a close relationship with my grandparents.  My grandfather died when I was in the 2nd grade, so the memories of him are fuzzy around the edges, and not quite as clear as those of my grandmother.   But, I do remember him to be a giant of a man (6′ 4″), gentle, and he would play with me in the evening.  He was a farmer, and one evening, he brought a bunny rabbit home in his boot for me.    We had this “prankster” type can — when you turned it over, it made the sound of a cow.   I was gullible even back then.  He had me convinced that he had brought home a cow, and it was in the backyard … couldn’t I hear it?   I would go out and look, and just could not find it.  I have memories of him, laying on the sofa, watching TV.

Decisions, decisions

Posted by Prairierose on Jan 15, 2006

Thursday 13 — #10

I don’t like confrontations — and equally so, I don’t like make decisions. Esp. when it could have “life and death” consequences. But I have been faced with several this week.

When I was called at the hospital to come get my aunt — I knew it wasn’t going to be good. They had just called to have me MEET them there … and now they are calling that I should come get her???? what was up with that. When I got them, I was met by her nurse, and she told me everything that had been going on with my aunt all day, and now the EMTs were saying there wasn’t anything wrong with her, she didn’t need to go to the hospital.

Rahab

Joshua 2 Click on verse to read in seperate window.

1. Are there any Rahabs in your life, women with a past who need to know they are loved by God no matter what their history? Do you believe they are forgiven, completely? How might you communicate that to them? (Higgs. 2004)
2. Do you ever find yourself judging such women, avoiding their company, or viewing them as distasteful? What are some ways you can push past your prejudice? (Higgs. 2004)
3. If you identify with Rahab in some way, what names have you been called - or have you called yourself - because of your past? Do those labels still have the power to wound you? What steps do you need to take to be set free from your past? How might you “hang out your red cord” and let others know the truth about your past - and your hope for the future? (Higgs. 2004)
4. Is it possible that Rahab didn’t truly acknowledge God but instead told these men what they wanted to hear so they would spare her life? What clues in her behavior point to true faith - not falsehood - in action? (Higgs. 2004)
5. Why did the Lord destroy Jericho? And why, of the thousands of people who lived there, was Rahab the only one who heard the Lord’s voice calling her out of sin? (Higgs. 2004)
6. One of the themes of this story in Joshua is obedience. Point out all the ways various people were obedient. . . and disobedient. (Higgs. 2004)
7. Of Rahab’s many good qualities, which one impresses you most? Who in your circle of friends demonstrates that same virtue, and how has she done so? What is the most important lesson you’ve learned from the ultimately redemptive story of Rahab the harlot? (Higgs. 2004)

Update: Sweet Georgia Brown

Posted by Prairierose on Jan 14, 2006

Last night was incredible.  I didn’t know what to expect, but it was a really good evening.   Didn’t think so at first.   I had the address.   It should have been pretty simple.  And, when it was all said and done, it was.  But, we drove.  And we drove.  And we were convinced we were “out of town” and there just coudln’t be anything out here.   But, the numbers on the mail boxes reflected that maybe we were still on course, so we kept driving.   We finally came to something — a golf course/Country Club, and we were going to turn around there — when Ethan says “We’re here — in small letters under the name of the Golf Course was the name of the restrauant that we were to be at.     And we weren’t even late!

When I had asked him, Harry said it was a fairly “dressy” occasion.  Not formals and suits, but nice church clothes.    Well, there was a variety, but mostly leaned towards really dressy.   We weren’t totally out of place, but did feel like “the poor relation”.  And that feeling continued to the meal … where — there were 3 forks.   You always watch these movies where the guy tries to figure out “which” fork to use.  And, we weren’t the only ones who were unsure, but again …  we were definately “not at home” there.

But, it was a good meal.   The guys from the Barbershop group welcomed us warmly, and included Ethan whenever it was approporiate … but here again … all of them are married, middle aged or older … and Ethan is single and in highschool.    But, they made him fit in as much as possible.  At the end, they thanks the wives for putting up with the long hours of practice, etc, and had the guys go up and get a rose for their wife to say “thank you”.   And the guy in charge looked at Ethan, because he wasn’t getting up, and said “you get up here and get one for your mother”.

It was a delicious meal.  The “meeting” part of the evening went quickly, and the installation of officers was far from “dry and boring”.   He put a spin on it, and we laughed all the way through.   After that, we were entertained by a couple different barbershop quartets, and then the whole group got up and sang to us ladies (and David:).   Ethan has come along ways since July.   Granted, he still has a ways to go, and he by no means is on “their” professional level yet.   But, he has definately improved, and is not an embarrassment to the group.   He doesn’t need his music, and he was very animated and very much a part of the group as they sang.   Just “one of the guys”.

Like I said, I didn’t know what to expect, but I wasn’t disappointed.  For what it was, it was very enjoyable.

Wednesday Wonders - Eve

Posted by Prairierose on Jan 14, 2006

Eve

Genesis 2:20 -3:24 Click on verse to read in seperate window.

1. Eve’s first two mistakes involved gettin into a discussion with the serpent about what God had and had not said. Have you ever walked into that kind of trap, either in your own heart or face to face with someone who doubted God’s Word? Did it have the outcome you hoped for? What did you learn from the experience? What might you do next time? (Higgs. 2004)

2. Her next two mistakes involved weren’t oral but visual: She was looking in the wrong place. Her eyes wer on herself instead of God, and she wanted her eyes to be opened. Have you ever gone exploring with your eyes wide open and discovered more than you bargained for? What leads us into the temptation to look in the wrong places? What ptractical methods could we use to keep our eyes on God? (Higgs. 2004)

3. Eve wanted to be like God, knowing good and evil. “I can do it myself” and “I know best” often spill out of our minds if not our mouths. Find three verses in Scripture that emphasize why being like God is impossible and wanting to be so is sinful. (Higgs. 2004) There is no wrong answer here.

4. Eve couldn’t stop looking at the tree or listening to her growling stomach or marveling at how pretty the fruit was or thinking how helpful it would be to have more knowledge. Our craving for more is manifested in every area of our lives. What do you want more of right now physically? Emotionally? Spiritually? Do any of those desires devetail with the Word and will of God? If not, how can you adjust them to be Christ-centered rather than me-centered? (Higgs.2004)

5. At the very point Eve could have stopped herself, she didn’t. Been there? How do you feel when you don’t stop? How do you feel when you do manage to control that urge to sin? What have you learned from those encounters? Eve did eat the fruit. What might you have said to her just before the first bite? What about after that fatal bite? When she offered Adam a taste, she sinned again. What thought processes do we need to go through to stop such a cyle of sin in our own lives and the tragedy of encouraging other to sin with us? (Higgs. 2004)

6. Eve’s bit cover-up came next. Hiding behind skimpy leaves, then hiding behind trees. Can you think of a time you physically tried to cover up the evidence of sin? Was it effective? Why or why not? Is covering up as “serious” a sin as the initial act of disobedience? Why or why not? (Higgs. 2004)

7. Her final mistake was one we all make: putting the blame on someone else. “The snake tricked me” was her ploy. Who or what do you tend to blame first when you sin: a friend? Your parents? Your husband, or children? Your job situation? Your finances? The Adversary? The Lord? How can we stop playing the blame game? What’s the biblical model for handling sin in our lives, step by step? Can you come up with a handy reminder for those important steps?
What’s the most important lesson you learned from the story of this bother of all Bad Girls, Eve? (Higgs. 2004)

Thursday 13 -  #3

That is one of the many songs I love listening to when the Barbershop Chorus performs at our church.   I love this group even more now that Ethan is a part of it.

So what does this have to do with going to Topeka?  Being a part of any group or organization means participation …. involvement.   Ethan is involved — he goes to Topeka (60 miles away) most every Tuesday night for practice.  But sometimes involvement takes you a step farther.  Tonight is installation of officers.  No.  Ethan isn’t an officer.  But, it is a family-evening, a catered meal, and if we are going to support his endeavors in doing this, we need to try and attend as many “family” events as we can.

Just one more thing on the agenda.  But, it will make for a nice family evening, a bit out of the ordinary, and we’ll get to see Ethan in his barbershop element.

The Rest Of The Story

Posted by Prairierose on Jan 13, 2006

Thursday 13 - #1

I’ve debated back and forth just how to go forth with this particular Thursday 13.   I made a list of things I wanted to blog about.   Those who stopped by, want to hear “the rest of the story”.   So…..   do I do one very very long entry and link it back for them?   or, do I evolve this in to next week’s Thursday 13, and do seperate entries for each, which is probably what I would have done if I had stayed up with my blogging anyway.   So, I think that is the route I am going to take.  13 seperate entries; and then when I post next week’s Thursday 13, I will just copy this weeks list into that entry, and link each one in.  That way, they can pick and choose which ones they want to read, instead of being trapped in one very long entry.

I want to keep up with the blogging schedule as well (note the Photo Friday), so these will be interspursed in between, because I’m sure its going to take me a few days to get them all done.

Thirteen Things about Carolyn
13 Things I Want To Blog About This Week

1.  Since I’m feeling overwhelmed, and running short on time, I think I am going to “multi-task” here.  I have several things I want to blog about, but if i don’t get them down on “paper” (or screen, i guess), I’m afraid they are going to go by the wayside.  So, maybe if I list them here, I can still come back to them and get them blogged about in the next day or two.   AND, it also serves the purpose of my TT week.   Always a purpose.

2.  Why we had to attend a School board meeting because of Ethan.

3.  Why we have to go to Topeka tomorrow because of Ethan

4.  Why I was at the hospital until 12:30 last night.

5.  Reoccuriing dream …. about my mother.

6.  About a certain someone singing the Star Spangled Banner at a basketball game next Wednesday

7.  What happened 2 years ago this week

8.  Why Ethan needs a personal secretary (to keep his activity calendar straight and not double book things!)

9.  My new toy

10.  I hate decision making — or at least decisions like these.

11.  What is Forensics and why did my son join?

12.  Does this have anything to do with the Criminal Law merit badge he is working on for Boy Scouts?

13.  When will I have time to blog about all of these things.   Stay tuned.  I will get them blogged…
