Getting Away
I wish he were going, but tonight is a perfect example of why he can’t. For many years, David would attend a 3 days “retreat” in the Kiamichi mountains. A group of our guys from the church would travel to Honobia, OK, and basically just back to nature and closer to God. No showers. No ties. Just kick back, and fellowship with other Christian men, taking in workshops and sessions. He always enjoyed going, and it was always a good thing for him to get away.
But. As a truck dispatcher, it just. Does. Not. Work. He tried last year, and all it did was add to his frustration load. He wasn’t able to enjoy himself, he was on the phone most of the time — a land line phone, 5 minutes at a time, and then go to the back of the line for his next turn. The cell phone reception in the mountains is pretty much non existance.
Tonight, one of his drivers called…the load number David gave him on Friday wasn’t right. Where the driver is loading, they are saying the load has already been picked up — on Thursday. The driver didn’t mess up. David didn’t mess up. The broker who gave him the number did. And he can’t call him untiil 8:00 in the morning. And, the driver should be at the other place — to unload, at 8:00 in the morning, and now he can’t load until morning. Not a good deal.
This is just one of many mishaps that happens, on a weekly …and sometimes daily basis. And David has 11 of them to keep rolling and figure out loads for.
I wish he could go. But I understand why he doesn’t. He tried. It didn’t work. So, until he is in a different profession, this is something that will remain just a nice memory.
And he’s not the only one. There is a another guy in our church that would like to go as well. But he owns a roofing company, and to leave his dozen or so employees … for 3 -4 days …. he might as well tell them to just taken the next 4 days off. And thats not an option. So, David not alone in his decision. Its just too bad these guys can’t get away, and that their professions, their job — have such a hold on them that getting away, even for just a couple of days, just isn’t possible.
